Mission & About Us

Woodland Savanna Land Conservancy is dedicated to long-term preservation of open land in Northwest Indiana. Woodland Savanna Land Conservancy provides a mechanism in our area where you, the landowner, can secure your piece of the American Earth so that it remains intact for generations.

Our Board of Directors includes local attorneys, biologists, and business people who have experience with land preservation agencies. We share the view that development should be complemented by open land conservation.

We are not associated with local or state government. We are a tax exempt charity with the goal of preserving significant land in perpetuity.

Lands donated to the WSLC will be preserved for their intrinsic value for future generations. These lands will be reserved for the renewal of the spirit through the preservation of natural beauty and scientific value.

University student volunteers

Stewardship

Most stewardship is carried out by volunteers, often by student groups from Valparaiso University. Several times a year they work with WSLC Board members to remove invasive honeysuckle bushes to open the forest understory so that young native trees are able to flourish. Tree planting is another volunteer activity, as well as yearly roadside trash pickup where necessary.

Donating land involves many considerations–tax benefits, picturing future use or access, naming, to name a few. These answers will help in thinking whether donation to a conservancy is right for you and your family.

Who are the land donors?

Land is given to a conservancy for a variety of reasons–sentiment, commitment to preservation, unique character or history of an area, or incentivized for developed land use reasons. Examples of WSLC holdings include
*Individuals who wish to see their family holdings protected in perpetuity.
*Developers with woodlands or wetlands not suitable for building.
*Mitigation lands.
